Day 4 - Verse 95 - "This will be a sign for you: you will find a baby wrapped snugly in cloth and lying in a manger." Luke 2:12

This will be our last day on this verse...is it implanted in your brain for future reference?  What is it about this verse that will stick with you?  The fact that God's Son was sent to earth in such meager surroundings showing God's total indifference to earthly wealth?  Or that the angels delivered such a specific sign to the shepherds and that we are also given signs to watch for?  Or that the shepherds had to go and seek to find the promised King just as we are told to seek to find Jesus our Savior? Or maybe you have something different that you have pulled out of this one sentence verse that you will take with you.

This is God's Word, "This will be a sign for you: you will find a baby wrapped snugly in a cloth and lying in a manger."  There is something for every person who reads this verse that God is ready to impart to you.  I am convinced that there is not a word of Scripture that is not intentional and purposeful if we ask God for His insight to see what He wants us to see through His utterances to us.

As we go through the rest of this Scripture memorization, I would remind you not to take lightly the fact that we are putting into our memories God's actual words...these are not helpful hints, or meaningful quotes, Scripture is the sword of the Spirit.  These are words that can slay our enemy. They have divine power and purpose.

Ephesians 6:13-18
Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people.

Hebrews 4:12
For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.

There's a reason that the Word of God is referred to as a sword---it is our offensive weapon to be used against our enemy, and it is the surgeon's scalpel that can exorcise the malignancies residing in our lives.  Use it as the very effective weapon and tool that has been given us.

Right now, I have to remind myself that I have this sword ready to pick up and take with me into each day.  When I am tempted to be fearful of what may lay ahead in my life and in the lives of my children and grandchildren, I remind myself that God has not left us unarmed.  We have been given His Word to allow us to move forward without fear!

Let's march forward with this tool at our ready disposal.  Not fearful, but ready for battle.

And this most recent verse will go with us---don't let anyone steal it from you---your Savior came, angels announced it, shepherds heard and obeyed, and they sought Him out and found Him...just as they had been promised.  Just as we are promised.  Just as all are promised.  Be like the angels today and PROCLAIM Him to someone who needs to know this beautiful story!

Day 3 - Verse 95 - "This will be a sign for you: you will find a baby wrapped snugly in cloth and lying in a manger." Luke 2:12

"You will find a baby.."

The angels sent the shepherds out to search for a baby...the baby they had declared was God's gift to mankind..a Savior.  I find it interesting that they didn't deliver the baby to the shepherds (they could have!), and they didn't miraculously transport the shepherds to the manger (they could have!), but they sent them out. Just like the Magi coming from the East, the shepherds had to start their own trek to find this special child...to seek, to find.

When I think about this, I can't help but think of the verses in Deuteronomy 4:29

But if from there you seek the LORD your God, you will find him if you seek him with all your heart and with all your soul.

and Jeremiah 29:13

You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.

and Matthew 7:7

Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.

The shepherds were promised that they would find the source of their worship IF they set out on their search and looked for the baby that the angels had described.  They would not find Him if they didn't go and look for Him.  They would not be able to testify to the truth of the angels' proclamation if they did not do their part and set out to seek Him.

We are likewise promised that we will find God and His truth...but we have to set out on our own journey and diligently seek it.  God invites us to seek Him, to show our desire for Him, to ask for His wisdom (James 1:5) and He promises that our seeking will not be in vain...He will make Himself known to us.  And for the prodigal, He waits to see us running down the road back to Him, and He is there...with arms open wide, to receive us.

The angels prompted the shepherds to go and find Him...the Spirit prompts us to go and find Him.  If you have never started your journey, it is not too late.  If you have and have gotten sidetracked, it is not too late to return to your trek.

The biggest mistake we can make is to ignore the call, continue to sit in our field and watch our sheep....or TV, or FB, or.....

Day 2 - Verse 95 - "This will be the sign for you: you will find a baby wrapped snugly in cloth and lying in a manger." Luke 2:12

What part of this verse is most important to you?  If you had been one of the shepherds on that dark winter night, hearing the angels proclaim the Messiah's arrival on planet earth, hearing them say, "This will be the sign for you...", what would you have thought?  Would there have been any chance at all that you would have ignored the fact that they have told you "the sign" to find this baby that will change the world?

When we are given signs, do we follow them?  The shepherds did.  They didn't hesitate.  The angels said, "here's the sign to look for" and they went out on their search.  The search for the baby that matched the sign's criteria...wrapped snugly in cloth and lying in a manger.  When they found that baby, they knew they had found the object of the angels' divine announcement.

Aren't we glad the shepherds didn't ignore the angels' instructions?  They paid attention.  They obeyed.

Are we still given signs?  Are we paying attention?

The disciples asked Jesus, "What will be the sign of your coming and of the end of the age?"  Jesus didn't think their question out of line or unworthy of a very serious and detailed response---the next 30 verses of Matthew 24.  What signs did Jesus relay:
1. Deception
2. False Messiahs
3. Wars & Rumors of Wars
4. Famines & Earthquakes
5. Persecution because of Allegiance to Christ
6. Falling Away from Faith
7. Increase of Wickedness
8. Loss of Love for Others
9. Preaching of the Gospel throughout the World

And what did Jesus tell His followers to do?  To "stand firm to the end."

Here are our signs.  Are we seeing them?  Are we looking?  Jesus told His disciples at the close of this chapter, “Now learn this lesson from the fig tree: As soon as its twigs get tender and its leaves come out, you know that summer is near. Even so, when you see all these things, you know that it is near, right at the door."

"Near", "right at the door"---relative terms in God's perspective of time.  But when we look at the signs, we cannot ignore that  they speak to our time.  Let us not be caught unaware.  Let us be diligent in our watching, asking for God's wisdom and discernment to see the signs that He sets before us.  But most importantly, to be obedient to Christ's command...to "stand firm to the end."

I am sitting in my home in Amarillo, Texas, on the eve of a Presidential primary election.  I am so thankful for the freedom to vote and I will celebrate in my ability to do that tomorrow. There are many things that I see going on in this election that make me watchful, and wary. My confidence is in no man and in no human's declarations of their power or ability to make all things great again. I pray that we elect a leader who seeks to do God's will; one who prays and humbles himself before God. I pray for that.  I pray that we do not fall into voting out of fear, but out of faith...putting our trust in God, not any man.

I am reminded that as a follower of Christ I am not to be anxious and I am not to fear.  No matter the outcome of our elections, I know that God is sovereign and trustworthy...and I will watch...watch for the signs.  And I pray that I will always, always, stand firm to the end.

For that baby who came wrapped snugly in cloths and lying in a manger, IS coming again!

Watch!

Day 1 - Verse 95 - "This will be the sign for you: you will find a baby wrapped snugly in cloth and lying in a manger." Luke 2:12

Technically, this is Day 2 for this verse of announcement of our Savior's birth.  But since the first day that we discussed it was in June 2014, I think we might just want to start over...agreed?

So I'm not going to go back and resurrect that day's discussion.  Not even sure what was said.  Let's just start fresh and see what Scripture says to us today

If you'll remember, we are using Robert Morgan's book, 100 Bible Verses Everyone Should Know by Heart.  Morgan divides his book into sections of Scripture so that we memorize verses that pertain to one another.  The last section of the book, the section that we are in, is "Alpha and Omega: The First and Second Comings of Christ."

The preceding verses in this section have been:

Isaiah 9:6   For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
Luke 2:10 But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people.
Luke 2:11 Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord.

Image result for Luke 2:12Bringing us to today's announcement, "This will be the sign for you: you will find a baby wrapped snugly in cloth and lying in a manger."  Luke 2:12

The angels told the shepherds of a sign...their sign was that the baby they were seeking would be wrapped snugly in cloth and lying in a manger. The baby that they had already been told was a cause for great joy.  The baby that they had already been told was a Savior, the Messiah, the Lord.

And how were they to be sure that the baby they found was the right baby?  Well, this heavenly sent baby, this Savior, this Messiah, this Lord would be found wrapped and in a manger....a manger!?!

Do you think the shepherds might have looked at each other after the angels departed and said, "Did you hear what I heard?  Did they really say the baby would be in a manger?  Maybe he said mansion...yeah, I bet that was it...our Savior, our King, must be in a mansion!"

No, the shepherds knew what they had heard...and they went to find the baby just as the angels had said, lying in a manger.  Does this tell us anything about the way that God views our value system? He found a meager manger to allow His Son to be born in...did that lowly manger take anything away from the royalty of our Lord Jesus?  Not one little bit.  Would Jesus have been any more of a valuable gift to the world had He been born into a plush, lovely nursery surrounded by handmaids caring for Him?  Not at all.

And yet, we continue to think that the more expensive our earthly "trappings", the more valuable our home, the more lovely our surroundings...these have to indicate the person's value as well.  That certainly wasn't the case for Jesus...it certainly doesn't seem to be the picture that God wanted us to see of how He views things.

It seems the very first lesson we are taught by God through the incarnation of His Son is that our earthly circumstances are pretty much meaningless in God's view.  If it wasn't necessary for His Son to live in earthly grandeur while He was in our midst, then it just must not matter that much!

A manger...yes, a manger.  Good enough for the King of Kings and Lord of Lords.  All that we see will pass away...whether a manger or a mansion.  Most of us find ourselves somewhere in between. Wherever we are, it is enough.  It is where we are living out this small bit of eternity...our earth story.

Here was the beginning of Christ's earth story.  You will find Him in a manger.

The mansion comes later.

Are you with me in this....again?

When I realized this week that it was five years ago that I established this blog with the intent of utilizing it as a tool for Scripture memorization, I was saddened that, after numerous attempts to refocus, I had stopped the blog completely about a year and a half ago...short of completion of the 100 memory verses that was the goal.  (And, if you were "traveling" with me on that previous journey, also just short of the completion of the analogy we were using of hiking the Applachian Trail!)  We were close, very close!  We were on Verse 95 out of the 100....and we had already reached Maine, the last state of the hike.  WHO abandons a journey when you're that close to the finish line????

So, we're going to finish this journey...and then, hopefully, start another one!  In the five years since I started before, so much has happened.  So much in our family, I'm sure so much in yours, and so much in our world.  For us, personally, we have had much sadness in the past five years.  It has been a time of being forced to remember that although we have every assurance from God that He loves us greatly, and that we have wonderful eternal promises, that life this side of heaven is filled with heartbreak.  These five years have brought to our family the loss of a son, a brother-in-law and two brothers, along with numerous friends.  One of the offsets of the blessing of living longer is that you have to suffer through the deaths of those around you, some expected, some very unexpected.  How do we continue to go through life with any degree of joy when we are forced to face such sadness, over and over again?

We can answer that question with all kinds of Christian platitudes.  "Only with faith"..."Only with a good church family"..."Only by knowing that we'll be reunited with our family again."...but I see people with no faith, no church, and noeternal  belief system rebound from tragedy, sometimes seemingly just as well as those who have deeply held convictions of God and His promises.  How does that happen?

I guess that's what you might say I've been doing the past 1.5 years...rebounding. Not all of the time in the way that I would have thought I would as a "faithful Christian." I look back and know that I have "rebounded" not through my faith, not through my church, not through my vision of heavenly family waiting for me...I have" rebounded" only because of God's faithfulness to me.  If it had depended on my faith, I would have been in trouble...because at times my faith was no more than the proverbial mustard seed.  But that mustard seed is still all it takes to allow God to move mountains, and He has moved some out of the way on my behalf.

Psalm 118:13-17
I was pushed back and about to fall, but the LORD helped me. The LORD is my strength and my defense; He has become my salvation.  Shouts of joy and victory resound in the tents of the righteous: “The LORD’s right hand has done mighty things! The LORD’s right hand is lifted high; the LORD’s right hand has done mighty things!”  I will not die but live, and will proclaim what the LORD has done.

So, yes, the unbeliever may rebound in an apparently comparable fashion.  They may be going on with life in a semi-positive manner, and telling others that you just have to put some things behind you and go on.

But I dare to say that the comparison ends when you ask both of us if we have anything to PROCLAIM about our experiences that actually brings us a sense of joy as we proclaim it.

I get to PROCLAIM that I wasn't the rebounder...that my God lifted me up, pulled me out of the pit, and placed my feet on solid ground.  I get to look back and KNOW that God was with me every day, that His right hand was holding on to me and doing mighty things.  I get to PROCLAIM that God is faithful and true.  I get to PROCLAIM with joy in my heart that my Lord has done mighty things!

So I began 2016 with this word in my heart...PROCLAIM!  And now, here it is February 26, 2016, and I'm getting ready to start proclaiming.  Proclaiming His love and His great faithfulness to me. Proclaiming that His promises ARE trustworthy and His provision IS assured.  Proclaiming the truth of Jesus Christ - His perfect life, His atoning death, His powerful resurrection, His triumphant ascension, and His assured return!

I'm asking you to join with me to confidently PROCLAIM our God and His power in our lives.  We will do this by first completing our 100 verses...and then continuing on together.  I want to encourage you to PROCLAIM your faith in Jesus Christ as your Savior at every opportunity.  As I said in the beginning, the past five years have brought much change, and our world has changed too.  We find our world crying out for us to bring the Gospel to all of those dying to hear God's words of love and salvation.  As believers, it is our calling and our Christian duty not to neglect this overwhelming need to hear the proclamation!

There is still grief to bear...there is still sadness.  There will be other things come in life that will be hard, but I believe God has taught me through this time not to expect this life to be without disappointment, heartache and....death.  But these things will not catch me as off guard and the enemy will not disarm me again in the way he has done before.  I know I have a God who defends me, who upholds me and who does mighty, mighty things!  He is my God, and I will PROCLAIM His mighty name!

A PLEA FOR BELIEF

A PLEA FOR BELIEF
Reading of Jeremiah in the OT and John the Baptist in the NT has made me think of our current times and the need for someone to cry out in the wilderness of our culture, “BELIEVE!”  Just as these prophets knew that change was coming, I believe that God is calling out to us now…change is coming! None of us know how many earth days we have left; we can be taken into eternity without a moment’s notice.  The day of Christ’s return is closer than it has ever been, we can be assured of that.  Once either of these events happens, there is no more opportunity to change our minds about what we believe.  But today is ours, while we still have breath, God gives us the ability to choose our course, to determine in our hearts what we will believe about Him.  Please, please, please, take a few moments to consider the thoughts below.
There are so many, many different belief systems floating around now, that many will say, “Oh, I do believe…maybe not as you do, but my belief is just as valid as yours.”  While that may work for today, and for tomorrow, I am convinced that there will come a day that only one belief system will be valid…the belief in Jesus Christ as the Son of God, at whose name every knee will bow and every tongue confess that He alone is Lord over all.
Philippians 2:9  Therefore God exalted Him to the highest place and gave Him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
That is why I am so urgently asking you to truly examine belief in Christ.  Do not reject Him without at least examining and pondering the possibility of His truth.
~~~~~~~
I understand that I am not the most scholarly theologian who has ever stated their arguments for their beliefs, but I am sincere, and I ask you to read through the simplicity of why I believe in God the Father, Jesus Christ His Son, and the Holy Spirit:
1.        Because I am not an atheist.  I cannot look around at all of creation, at humanity, at the universe and accept the fact that all of this very balanced order came out of chaos.  The probabilities of such an occurrence are just too minute to offer this as an answer that I can believe in.  The human body is too intricately detailed in its design to have been formed without a designer.  So, if there is a “someone” out there, who/what is it?
Genesis 1:1  “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.”
Romans 1:20  "For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities---His eternal power and divine nature---have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made…”
2.       Because the need for a creator forces me to seek to know who that creator is.  Here’s where multiple versions of gods come into play…the Greeks had them, the Romans had them, and boy does our current day culture have them.   Once you’ve decided that there probably is “a god”, you need to decide who that god is.   You can pick and choose from a plethora of gods, or you can mix and match and make up your own god, or you can determine that you are actually god.  (Although if that’s the conclusion you come to, I’d really like to hear how you brought the entire universe into being!)  All of these theologies are available to us.  And it’s not because we have developed into such an intellectual or philosophical society---the same situation was present in Athens when Paul spoke to them.
Acts 17:22 “Paul then stood up in the meeting of the Areopagus and said, ‘People of Athens!  I see that in every way you are very religious.  For as I walked around and looked carefully at our objects of worship, I even found an altar with this inscription:  TO AN UNKNOWN GOD.  So you are ignorant of the very thing you worship---and this is what I am going to proclaim to you.  The God who made the world and everything in it is the Lord of heaven and earth and does not live in temples built by human hands.’”
3.       Because that out of all the god stories offered, there is only one that conveys a God who cares enough about His creation to make Himself known to them…the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.  The God who chose Israel as His witness…not just to favor them among the nations, but for them to testify of His power to the nations.  When they followed His commands they were blessed, and when they did not, He allowed them to be taken into captivity.  Throughout the OT there are multitudes of verses conveying God’s desire that Israel witness to the world of His power.  He wants to be known for who He is to all peoples.  Can any other god story offer that?
Deuteronomy 4:5-8 “See, I have taught you decrees and laws as the LORD my God commanded me, so that you may follow them in the land you are entering to take possession of it.   Observe them carefully, for this will show your wisdom and understanding to the nations who will hear about all these decrees and say, ‘Surely this great nation is a wise and understanding people.’ What other nation is so great as to have their gods near them the way the LORD our God is near us whenever we pray to Him?  And what other nation is so great as to have such righteous decrees and laws as this body of laws I am setting before you today?”
Joshua 4:23-24 “For the LORD your God dried up the Jordan before you until you had crossed over.  The LORD your God did to the Jordan just what He had done to the Red Sea when He dried it up before us until we had crossed over.  He did this so that all the peoples of the earth might know that the hand of the LORD is powerful….”
1 Chronicles 16:24  “Tell the nations about His splendor, tell all the nations about His miraculous deeds!”
Isaiah 55:4  “Look, I made him a witness to nations…”
4.       Because of the historical person of Jesus of Nazareth.  From God’s desire to be known by His creation, and His overriding love for them, at precisely the right time He took the next step…Israel’s role as His nation of witness and testimony also led to the birth of God’s own Son, Jesus Christ, into the world…actually in the flesh…He came to share who God is and how much He loves humanity.  Can any other god story show a god who would go to this measure to show who He is to His creation?
Luke 1:68-79  “Praise be to the Lord, the God of Israel, because He has come and redeemed His people, He has raised up a horn of salvation for us in the house of His servant David…to rescue us from the hand of our enemies, and to enable us to serve Him without fear in holiness and righteousness before Him all our days.”
John 1:14  “The Word became flesh and made His dwelling among us.  We have seen His glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.”
John 3:16  “For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”
5.       Because of what God revealed to us through Jesus.  He showed us that He is a God of compassion, mercy, forgiveness and absolute love.  But also that He is a God of justice and holiness.  That He will not accept us as His children if we are rebellious to His nature, that we must accept His Lordship over our lives, and allow Him to transform us to His nature, not being “stiff-necked” and self-willed.  This takes submission on our part, humbling ourselves to acknowledge that He is God, and that we are His creation, created to bring Him glory.  Does any other god story show us who we are to be?
Matthew 22:37-39  “Jesus replied, ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.  This is the first and greatest commandment.  And the second is like it: Love your neighbor as yourself.’”
Matthew 5:4x-48  “I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be children of your Father in heaven…
…Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.”
6.       Because of what Jesus did for us while He was on earth.  He lived a perfect life of love for others, showing no preferential treatment to those who held power or wealth; transforming the minds of twelve common men to allow them to see eternal truths.  He then, in the greatest act of love ever, took all the world’s rebellion against His Father to the cross, in shame and agony, bore it so that God the Father, in all His holiness, could look down upon His creation in mercy, without judgment, and again accept them.  Forgiveness is available to all who come to God in repentance and acceptance of Jesus’ atonement for their shortcomings, failures and rebellion.  Does any other god story show that kind of action driven out of love?
Matthew 4:18-19  “And Jesus, walking by the Sea of Galilee, saw two brothers, Simon called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea; for they were fishermen.  Then He said to them, ‘Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men.’”
Matthew 28:19  “Go, therefore, and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.”
Romans 5:8   “For God demonstrates His own love for us in this:  while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.”
 2 Corinthians 5:20b-21  “We implore you on Christ’s behalf:  Be reconciled to God.  God made Him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in Him we might become the righteousness of God.”
7.       Because of the ultimate display of God’s power.  God the Father delivered His Son from the dead and raised Him to life again.  Jesus witnesses to God’s power over death to over 500 people in the 40 days after his crucifixion.  The things He must have relayed to those people in those days!  Amazing!  Lives forever changed…lives now dedicated to spreading the truth of God’s story, and a mission instilled to take these words of God throughout the world.  This mission would cause many, including eleven of the twelve apostles, to die martyrs’ deaths.  Would all these people die for a lie?   They were not dying for a “belief”, they were dying for what they had seen…Jesus’ life, death, resurrection and ascension.  Does any other god story witness to that kind of power over death?
Acts 1:1-3  “In my former book Theophilus, I wrote about all that Jesus began to do and to teach until the day He was taken up to heaven, after giving instructions through the Holy Spirit to the apostles He had chosen.  After His suffering, he showed Himself to these men and gave many convincing proofs that He was alive.  He appeared to them over a period of forty days and spoke about the kingdom of God.”
1 Corinthians 15:3-6  “For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance:  That Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, that He was buried, that He was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures, and that He appeared to Cephas, and then to the Twelve.  After that He appeared to more than five hundred of the brothers and sisters at the same time…”
8.       Because of the gift of the Holy Spirit!  Not only did God show His power through Israel, His love through Jesus Christ, but now He shares His presence with us through the Holy Spirit living within us.  When we acknowledge who He is, what He has done, and our hopelessness without Him, He delivers His promised gift…the Holy Spirit, as His guarantee that we not only are His in this life, but for eternity and to impart His power through us.  Does any other god story offer that kind of transformation of lives?
Acts 2:38  “Repent, and each one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.”
1 Corinthians 6:19-20  “Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God?  You are not your own; you were bought at a price.”
Galatians 5:25  “We get our new life from the Spirit, so we should follow the Spirit.”
9.       Because of our promised future…what other god story promises what is ahead for those who adhere to its belief?  We have that promise…Jesus is coming again to claim His own.  If we die prior to His return, we are told that we will pass from this life into the next.  We don’t pass with uncertainty; we can absolutely know where we are going.  That is why we can have true joy and peace now---there is no fear of death, for our God lives, He loves us, and He will never leave us nor forsake us.
John 11:26  “I am the resurrection and the life.  The one who believes in Me will live, even though they die; and whoever lives by believing in Me will never die.”
John 14:1-3  “ ‘Do not let your hearts be troubled.  Trust in God, trust also in Me.  In my Father’s house are many rooms.  If it were not so, I would have told you.  I am going to prepare a place for you.  And if I go to prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am.’ “
Acts 1:11 “ ‘Men of Galilee,’ they said, ‘why do you stand here looking into the sky?  This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come back in the same way you have seen Him go into heaven.’ “
1 John 5:13  “I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life.”
10.   Because God longs for us to be at home with Him.  There’s not another god story that I know of that shows the absolute desire of God to bring His children home to Him.  He went to great lengths to ensure that we can have that home, but He still leaves the choice to us…what will we choose to believe?
Luke 15:20-24 “While the son was still a long way off, his father saw him and felt sorry for his son.  So the father ran to him and hugged and kissed him…. ‘My son was dead, but now he is alive again!  He was lost, but now he is found!’  So they began to celebrate.”
2 Peter 3:9  “The Lord is not slow in keeping His promise, as some understand slowness.  Instead He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.”
What will we choose to believe?  If any of this makes sense to you, or seems like it might make sense, please pray to God to soften your heart so that your eyes may be opened to see Him, to know His truths. Or find a good Christian friend to sit down and talk through the statements above, or other thoughts and questions that you may have, and explore the possibility that the Bible contains God’s truths for this life and for life eternal.
This is the most important thing you can do in your life --- choose to believe in Jesus --- He is the Way, the Truth and the Life.  No one can come to the Father except through Him…He is the Way that God brought to us as our Savior.  God is not a god of chaos, but of order.  It does not seem illogical to me that He would give us only one way to Him, a very clear and defined way, but a way that requires belief.  Bend your knee in prayer and ask…that’s a challenge.  Just pray and ask for truth, God’s truth, and see what He brings to you.
Deuteronomy 4:29 “But from there you will seek the LORD your God, and you will find Him if you seek Him with all your heart and with all your soul.  When you are in distress and all these things come upon you in the latter days, when you turn to the LORD your God and obey His voice (for the LORD your God is a merciful God), He will not forsake you nor destroy you nor forget the covenant of your fathers which He swore to them.”
Deuteronomy 30:19  “This day I call the heavens and earth as witnesses before you that I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses.  Now choose life, so that you and your children may live and that you may love the LORD your God, listen to His voice, and hold fast to Him.  For the LORD is your life…”
Is anyone ready to finish what we started?? It is T-I-M-E!
We set out on a journey to commit 100 verses to memory and I allowed that journey to stop after we finished 94 of the 100...who does that?  We have six more verses to go, and we're going to get there!  Let's pick it up and complete this journey, and then ask God where He wants to take us next!
To start again, we have to realize where we are picking up...and that was in the series of verses that heralded the arrival of the baby Jesus.  We had memorized:
Isaiah 9:6  "For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be on His shoulders.  And His name shall be called Wonderful Counselor,The mighty God, The eternal Father, The Prince of Peace."
Luke 2:10   "But the angel said to them, 'Do not be afraid, for I bring you good news of great joy, which will be for all the people.' "
and
Luke 2:11  "For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, which is Christ the Lord."
Read through these three verses and let them sink into your being...a Child was born, a Child of good news, great joy, for everyone...a Child, a Savior...our Christ, our Lord.  If you have times of doubt, when the enemy plants questions in your mind, come back to these verses.  Read them and hear the certainty of who was sent.  Remember that angels announced His arrival, that He fulfilled all prophecy, and that He changed the world!  Don't ever doubt that Jesus is THE ONE...there is no other Savior.  He is God's answer for us, and He is a good, good answer.  He is an answer that brings joy like no other...for He answers in completeness and wholeness the eternal question of HOW sinful mortals such as you and I can come before our Holy God and expect to live with Him for eternity!  And then when you read these sweet verses again, join with me and say, "Thank You Lord!"
Now for verse 95...are you ready for it?  You should be!  I have certainly given you a long enough rest between these two stops on our trek!
Luke 2:12  "This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger."
Not until I read Robert Morgan's commentary on his verse did I ever make the connection...do you see it?  Read this verse again, and then read Luke 23:52-53...no I'm not going to include the text, you need to look it up!  But when you do,  I just bet you'll say, "Whoa!",  just like I did.
Here we see Jesus' entry into the world...born in a manger, most likely a cave, wrapped in cloths, angels overseeing His arrival, and His mother by His side.  Then we skip forward and view His earthly burial...the similarities are something that only Scripture could capture so miraculously! The two locations only a few miles apart...the two events only separated by thirty three years.
We find the baby, we find the crucified Jesus...as His earthly story began, so it ends.  But read on, oh read on...for Jesus' earthly story resides within His eternal story.  Thirty three years on earth, but an eternity in existence with God the Father.
And because of Him, we too can live on...whatever our earthly story consists of, it is just the beginning of our eternal story when we place our lives in His trustworthy hands.
One more thing tonight that I must share...prior to Jesus' arrival, prior to John the Baptist's proclamations of His coming, God had been silent since the time of His prophet Malachi, 400 years before.  In reading the other night, I came across these verses in Malachi that I had never read, or if I had read them I had not really absorbed them.  Malachi 3:16-18 ~
"Then those who feared the LORD talked with each other, and the LORD listened and heard. A scroll of remembrance was written in his presence concerning those who feared the LORD and honored his name.
"They will be mine," says the LORD Almighty, "in the day when I make up my treasured possession. I will spare them, just as in compassion a man spares his son who serves him.And you will again see the distinction between the righteous and the wicked, between those who serve God and those who do not."
At a time when God was about to become silent, He listened.  He listened to those who talked with each other about Him, who feared Him and who honored Him.  He promised to remember them and to show compassion to them.
If God was listening then, I am certain that He is listening for the same type of people today...let us be those people...people who talk boldly of God, who fear Him and who honor Him.
